Authentic Vintage Hair Techniques-The ‘Middy’ Haircut

Due to all the requests for more information on the ‘middy’ haircut I mentioned in my previous videos, as well as my constant need for change, I just went ahead and got it done! This video is a bit long-winded but basically, it discusses the different reasons to get a ‘middy’ haircut as well as the options once you have it. If you have any other questions, let me know. I’m going to post another vid today showing one way of styling the cut so you can see that is does have the authentic 1940′s look. Special thanks to Lisa at Studio 25 Salon in Carthage Tn!

    Do you have an example of the other hair styles in the book? I can’t really tell by the diagram what the overall cut would look like for some…

    @KiwiMangoLove I have recreated many of the styles in this book in this Authentic Vintage Hair Techniques series as well as my other videos. I have the middy haircut for all the videos following this one so go thru the list for ideas.

    You look like uma thurman with this haircut, because she had her hair like this at one point :]

    You inspired me and I took the middy diagram to an old lady stylist at great clips today, I got the middy plus and she did a great job, my hair is naturally curly it looks really rock and roll a little hipster without styling I can not wait to play with it! I have watched all of your videos just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you!

    How do you think the long middy would work for naturally thick, wavy hair?

  6. LisaFreemontStreet December 16, 2010 at 9:38 pm #

    @fithealthyhips
    Very well…look at Rita Hayworth! Her hair was very wavy and thick…so was Ava Gardner’s.

    Women also cut their hair shorter in the ’30s and ’40s because they could sell their hair to rayon producers.

    Are you filming the video with an open window next to a playground? Some people might be able to tune that out but I find it distracting and I couldn’t get more than a minute into the video without being so annoyed. Try making videos when the kids are not home.

    @koolqueen4freddie I had a longer response but when I re-watched this video and realized that ‘a minute into the video’ doesnt even have any background noise to speak of, I felt that my original response was unnecessarily apologetic. I have kids…lots of them. I couldnt care less if you find them distracting. :)

    Thank you so much for showing me what the middy (long) looks like unstyled! I was thinking about getting it, but was too worried about what it would look like on days I was too lazy to curl it! You are awesome, and I love your youtube channel and blog – thanks!

    I’ve been thinking about getting my hair cut like this but would the diagram only be in that particular book or are there other sources I could go to? Perhaps the other vintage hairstyle book (vintage hairstyles by Lauren Renells) or would it not be in that?

  12. LisaFreemontStreet May 16, 2011 at 10:07 pm #

    @dramaindulged no….I have only seen it in this book. But you can just ask for a layered haircut.

    @LisaFreemontStreet Alrightie! Thanks :D

    Love this video and all your others. You got this awesome cut in Carthage? I’m just 20 minutes from there. You’ve totally inspired me to bite the bullet and get a middy cut.

    Love all your videos. Thank you for all your tutorials, they are so helpful & inspiring ; ). On a side note, I love the blue color on the wall in the background. Would love to know what brand & color it is. Thanks!!!

  16. LisaFreemontStreet July 25, 2011 at 6:09 pm #

    @missbridgetk Thanks so much. :) I do miss this color. :( We live in a rental house now and I’m not allowed to paint the walls. This was my favorite color at the old house…it is a color from Porter Paints called Deep Peacock. I used the color three shades lighter on the same paint chip for the kitchen (which you can see off of this room). It was called Milan Turquoise.

    You’re hair is beautiful! I’ll have to try it out sometime!

    I just wanted to comment to say this is essentially a Diagonal back with long layers throughout. :x As a stylist I’ve been glaring at the diagrams and personally dont get them. haha, having looked at the cut on you and other youtubers i figured it out. :] lol!

  19. LisaFreemontStreet August 5, 2011 at 4:13 pm #

    @HummingbirdKrista Aren’t they the same diagrams you study in beauty school? My stylist said they were. :)

  20. kristaxhoward August 5, 2011 at 4:55 pm #

    @LisaFreemontStreet They may have been a few years back, the diagrams are alot different now. They more show the vertical elevations and stuff.. i tried to pull up a picture online but i cant find one, hahah they are all in my cosmo books

  21. amaranthisme September 12, 2011 at 1:27 am #

    Ashley, is your hair feathered or just blunt cut? my stylist butchered the ends, and I need them fixed, the curls aren’t tapered!

  22. LisaFreemontStreet September 12, 2011 at 2:20 pm #

    @amaranthisme tapered! NOT blunt. Definitely go and get them tapered. It will be worth it even if you have a bit less length.

  23. amaranthisme September 13, 2011 at 2:17 am #

    Aha, I’ll go do that. Lucky the haircut was cheap.

    As always THANK YOU.
